We managed to drive right past Skútustaðir as I was busy looking for something else I thought we were coming to first. Even having visited them before I didn’t really notice them – in my defence the general area around here is made up of various otherworldly landscapes. But, these are still pretty spectacular when you do take the chance to go and look at them.
You may be wondering what they are…they are almost like giant anthills. They are actually pseudocraters caused by steam following lava flowing in this wetland area.
Situated on the shores of Lake Mývatn there are some walks of varying lengths you can do around them.
Because they are in an area surrounded by many other spectacular natural displays they are probably a little underrated considering how unusual they would be anywhere else in the world.
Finally, here is a view looking down into one.
