My first trip to Iceland was to do the most famous walk in Iceland, the “Laugavegur” trek which goes from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. You get all kinds of terrain on this walk, which is what makes it so popular. The map below (from nat.is) shows the route. At the time, Eyjafjallajökull wasn’t the global superstar it later became!
My group was underprepared in a number of ways, but the experience was inspiring enough to keep me coming back to Iceland to this day. I’ve unearthed my photos from this trip and will share them in the next few posts for those thinking about doing this walk themselves.
The photos below are from the first and second days. We actually started with a short evening walk on arrival, and then a full day of walking to get to the “real” starting point of Landmannalaugar. I didn’t take many photos on these days as it was usually raining, snowing or both!
